Most of the modern vehicles are equipped with open-wheel designs that makes it easy to confirm the piston numbers in the calipers. Usually, for a single and 240SX dual caliper bracket, you can most probably see what is known as arches. They are found on the caliper face. If you count the total number of arches, you will be able to tell the total number of pistons present in the caliper. 4- and 6-piston calipers get a little trickier, however you may still be able to see the outline of the 2/3 outboard piston design.

Single piston calipers are mostly the sliding calipers that make a slight movement as the brake pads wear out.
