4 Ways To Tell How Many Pistons Are There In a Brake Caliper

A lot of times, our brake finder will ask this question — What is the number of pistons that the front/rear calipers have?. You don’t to have to stress about that and don’t even think of taking off the wheel to find out the real answer. Most of the modern vehicles are equipped with open-wheel designs that makes it easy to confirm the piston numbers in the calipers. Usually, for a single and 240SX dual caliper bracket, you can most probably see what is known as arches. They are found on the caliper face. If you count the total number of arches, you will be able to tell the total number of pistons present in the caliper. 4- and 6-piston calipers get a little trickier, however you may still be able to see the outline of the 2/3 outboard piston design.

Single piston calipers are mostly the sliding calipers that make a slight movement as the brake pads wear out. Most of these come with a bracket, but there are few applications, where the bracket is built inside the vehicle knuckle. Along with that, some of the single rear single piston calipers are equipped with a mechanism that can be used for the parking brake.

240SX dual caliper brackets and other dual calipers types are typically sliding calipers enabled with brackets, but some dual piston calipers are placed in a fixed position that come with opposing pistons, one of then being on the inboard and the other being on the outboard.

4-piston calipers are most certainly going to have a couple of inboard as well as outboard opposing pistons. 4-piston calipers are generally kept in a fixed position. This basically means the you won’t be able to see the bracket covering the caliper as with the 240SX dual caliper bracket mentioned above.

6-piston calipers typically feature 3 opposing pistons for both inboard and outboard. They are mostly present in a fixed position caliper and a bracket in not present, this is much similar to the design of the 4-piston design. For the 6-piston calipers, you can usually see the outlines of the 3 pistons on the caliper’s outboard side.
